This is the rare Jazzette kit, produced between 1966 and the mid 1970's; the sizes are 18"x12", 12"x8" and 14"x14".
Ludwig Jazzette is a very sought after set for the jazz drummers, specially if in original conditions; what you see pictured above was restored to perfect conditions.
Let's see in the detail all the repairs and restorations.
Bass drum: original shell from the late Sixtiesearly Seventies, rewrapped with a black covering and painted inside with a white coat. The lugs are more recent Ludwig ones (to their inside there is the spring and the sponge to limit the hummings), and so are the claws and the tuning rods, really too much shining to have at least 30 years... The legs are very similar to the original, the rail consolette is original of the period, but not the 4 bolts that block it on the shell. To a close inspection I can say that this is not a it not a converted 18" floor tom (we are all suspicious when we find a Vintage drum set with a 18" bass drum, and sometimes we are right!), and this is definitely a good thing. One last notice: the hoops seem to be original, but have not the usual groove like those of the years '60 and' 70, and the inlay Silver Sparkle is "leaned" on the hoop.
Tom: the first thing that we see are the "large lugs", odd enough for a 12" tom, at least until 1976; rewrapped with a black covering and painted inside with a white coat, there isn't the muffler and the 2 holes were filled. The hoops were replaced with modern triple flange with a low profile but rather strong and heavy. This is an original Ludwig tom, dating from the second half of the 1970's.
Floor tom: it comes from a "Club Date" set: in the inside we could see the holes of theoriginal 6 "Club Date" lugs, lately filled. Rewrapped with a black covering and painted inside with a white coat, there is the original "baseball bat" muffler, the 3 original legs, while the hoops were replaced with modern triple flange with a low profile but rather strong and heavy, as the 12" tom.
The professional restoration takes this set back to its full musical and working condition, and was completed with three brass "keystone badges", to give a nice and realistic "Sixties mood"to the drums.
Obviously this is not destined to the Vintage collectors, but a drumset that sounds distinguished (and not only in Jazz contexts...), suitable to the "working drummer" that needs a light and comfortable instrument to transport, with an elegant appearance look and a big, open, warm tone.
